Life Legacy


Garfield Evans, 83, of Joplin, Missouri passed away Tuesday, June 4, 2013 at his home, surrounded by his loving family. Garfield entered this life on July 8, 1929 in Amonate, Virginia to the union of the late William and Vicie (Ketron) Evans. After he graduated from McComis High School in McComis West Virginia, he enlisted in the United States Air Force. He faithfully served his country for Twenty One years, retiring in 1969. While in the service he served in many areas and had many duties. In his early days he was a morse code operator. One duty he felt much honored by, was serving on Air Force One during the presidency of President Eisenhower, President John Kennedy and President Johnson. After retiring from the Air Force and returning home, he owned and operated an appliance repair shop. Garfield enjoyed working on appliances and repairing stereos. He also had a great love for listening to his music. He also took heating and air conditioning classes at Franklin Tech in Joplin, Missouri. He was a member of Friendship Baptist Church, VFW of Joplin, Missouri and was Chaplin for many years for TREA. Garfield was united in marriage to Velma Brewster on May 26, 1951 in Pearisburg, Virginia. Together they shared sixty-two wonderful years.
He is preceded in death by his parents, two grandsons and two brothers. Garfield is survived by his wife of the home, two sons; William Evans and wife Jan of Joplin, Missouri, and Mark Evans also of Joplin, Missouri, three daughters; Krystal Berryman, Golden City, Missouri, Robin Dutra and Vickie Glasgow both of Joplin, Missouri, one brother, Charles Evans of St. Augustine, Florida., ten grandchildren and nineteen great grandchildren, Those honoring his life as pallbearers will be William Forste, Christopher Evans, Quenton Stone, Terrence Dutra, Jeremiah Yager and Stephanie Kuhler. Funeral services for Mr. Evans are 10:00 a.m. Saturday, June 8, 2013 at Thornhill-Dillon Mortuary in Joplin, Missouri. Burial will follow at Ozark Cemetery in Joplin, Missouri with full military honors. Visitation will be Friday, June 7, 2013 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the mortuary.
